Hype Night
On Saturday night, the TRU Wolfpack Athlete Council (WAC) hosted their first ever ‘Hype Night’ – an event supporting the Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams as they battled against the UNBC Timberwolves. The action kicked off at 5:30 at the Tournament Capital Centre (TCC). With nearly all Wolfpack student-athletes in attendance, the crowd was electric. Hype Night proved to be a roaring success, creating an unmatchable synergy between the athletes and their supporters. It became evident that this event had set the stage for a new tradition.
The WAC is a brand-new initiative kickstarted by three TRU soccer players: Patrick Izett, Marques Scott, and Ainsley Grether. Their goal is to organize events that bring together all athletes and offer them a place to interact and get to know each other outside of their sport. Encouraging student-athletes to attend and show support for games as well as cheering on fellow athletes not only boosts morale but also fosters a sense of pride and camaraderie in representing their school.
WAC Vice President, Ainsley Grether, spoke about Hype Night’s success saying, “We are so happy with how the night turned out. It had a lot of moving pieces throughout the last few weeks, but it was a hit, and I can’t wait for the next ones to come!”.
In a thrilling night of basketball, the women’s team battled hard and narrowly missed out on a victory with a final score of 64-60 in favour of UNBC. Additionally, Kate De La Mare set a new program record for a rookie with a game total of 4 blocks.
With the help of a season-high of 20 points from 5th-year guard, Daniel Bost, the men’s team secured a 69-63 victory over the Timberwolves.
TRU basketball teams will travel to Edmonton this weekend to take on the University of Alberta on Friday and Saturday.
The WAC will begin preparing for their next Hype Night supporting TRU’s Men’s and Women’s volleyball teams in their last regular season games against the Mount Royal Cougars on February 16/17 at the TCC.
