Outfit Playlist: What You Wear Shows What Music You Listen To

Our personality is created by our likes and dislikes, our achievements and goals, but also about what we witness. Music is a very important part of our lives and is a way to find a connection with something mirroring how you feel, or a way to distress, or just to boost up your mood, among other purposes. However, we choose what we listen to and what we wear. Believe it or not, our taste in fashion is influenced by what the artist wear and how we are always looking to be a part of something or to belong. So how we are trying to create some outfits connected to some genres of music, to show how this type of music is related to the outfit.

POP-ular Music

This genre of music is one of the most streamed from the whole population and one of the most POPular, pun intended. Whenever there is a new trend in fashion, artists, in this case pop artist, give their unique touch to those trends or they create their own, taking into account that it will gather a wave of audience’s attention, therefore the audience will take this as a model to follow and will adapt their wardrobe accordingly to what they like, here with music they enjoy being immersed in. Since most people like more than one artist, they have the opportunity of mixing and matching their looks, but always using a garment that shows its relation to the pop genre. Nowadays, pop outfits are created generally with oversized clothing, baggy jeans, puffy jackets, a lot of tops or crop tops, and always using appealing colours to stand out or to have some kind of harmony with the outfit. Here is our take for this type of music and the music video where the inspiration came from:

Welcome to Bollywood

The Hindi film industry is commonly referred to as Bollywood and is based in Mumbai, India. It produces movies in the Hindi language. The term “Bollywood” is a combination of the words “Bombay” and “Hollywood.” This genre is very popular in India as the songs are in Hindi language. This genre has a great impact in other countries too and its songs are heard worldwide. “Wakhra Swag” is the song that inspired to this genre. This song is a Punjabi song and the lyrics speak about the traditional attire of India. Every girl in India loves to wear a kurta which basically comes under the traditional look in India. The chosen outfit was inspired by this song, as it describes the beauty and culture of India. It gives a unique perspective of how people choose to wear something which matches their genre. It also shows the personality of the person from that background or from which culture they are from. Bollywood doesn’t limit to kurta, there are many songs with poppy songs, fast beats and different styles of choreography. It also creates an atmosphere or a zone for the people to relate to which makes them more likely to dress up in that way. Every person has a different personality and that’s what changes their appearance through music. Every Bollywood music has repeat lyrics and the hook stepped in the videos tend to grab more attention to that genre, which makes it more grossing than other genres as people love to hear that kind of music, and they can’t help themselves but sing it throughout the day which is very catchy. Many college students tend to dress like the song genre or the song they love the most which makes it more enjoyable to listen, and is a way of identifying how some can use some clothes related to this genre and making it theirs, while still revealing where the inspiration came from. The World of K-Pop

K-Pop (Korean Pop) is a genre of music that started in South Korea. The interesting thing about K-Pop is that there are different sub-genres (different styles) in K-Pop. One of the most common styles is known as “Bubblegum K-pop” (music styles that are more focused on upbeat, and happy / cheerful styles of music). Bubblegum genre can be used in both girl groups and boy groups. Some groups that are well known for fitting these styles includes Twice, Blackpink, Girls Generation, among others.

There are a total of 290 different K-Pop groups, and each K-Pop group has their own fandoms. Most K-pop fans identify what group they are into based off of their outfits. Some wear merchandise (concert hoodies, clothing collabs with different fashion brands) and other K-Pop fans also find fashion inspiration similar to their favourite groups. What comes to my mind when I think of the bubblegum style of kpop is feminine / girly clothes with a hint of refinement. The model (Meghan) is seen wearing a black and white checker skirt paired with a black long sleeve, off the shoulder shirt black wedge boots.

To summarise, fashion and music are constantly changing, but they go hand in hand during this evolution, and so the spectators trailing the steps artists take in the way they dress and how through these pieces of clothing they express their music taste and personality.
