Benefits Beyond the Mat

The Benefits of yoga for students

Do you ever wish to escape from all the stress of school, even just for a short while? Yoga might be just for you. TRU offers four distinct types of yoga classes on campus, free of charge! A couple of us decided to sign up for a class to see what it was all about.

Our Experience

From the moment we walked into the room, we were immediately set at ease with the soothing music and inviting atmosphere. We started the practice by focusing on mindfulness and being present in the moment. There was a big emphasis on breathwork and sensing how our bodies were feeling. The instructor guided us through a series of movements that exercised our balance, flexibility and strength. Throughout the class, we felt very present and it took our minds off of all the stresses of school. We were left with mental clarity and rejuvenated bodies as we finished the lesson and left.

Benefits of Yoga

Yoga has a plethora of benefits for university students which can assist them in their    academic success. Some of them are as follows:

  • Improved concentration: Yoga is a mindful exercise which enhances the focus and concentration levels which can help students during lectures, study sessions, and even during exams.
  • Better self-awareness: Yoga promotes self-connection, so university students may have a deeper understanding of who they are.
  • Stress reduction: Yoga can be a coping mechanism for stress as students have the worry of deadlines, quizzes, exams, and assignments.
  • Social connection: Joining yoga clubs on campus, provides the opportunity to form relations and create a sense of community.
  • Develop discipline, patience, and resilience: Meditation and Yoga can help students gradually raise their level of tolerance which can prevent conflicts in universities.
  • Can create a positive environment: A mindful discipline like yoga can make one positive and that positive vibe can spread, making classrooms a positive environment to study in.
  • Reduced body image issues: Yoga teaches pupils to adopt a positive mindset which helps them in forming self-love.
  • Creates balance:  Yoga provides students the balance that they need to successfully juggle their academic, work, and personal lives.

Students at TRU can access these wonderful advantages with ease, thanks to WolfPack Recreation. We encourage you to take an hour out of your day and try out one of the yoga classes on campus! You may find a great new outlet that can enhance these many aspects of your life.
