The Art in a Walk: Finding Art on Vacation
Written by The Wandering Writers Group
Why take a stroll around town when you’re on vacation?
Cities across the country are engaging with artists and creating beauty in unique spaces, making murals the perfect low-budget adventure to add to any trip! You’ll be able to grab a coffee, take a walk, and be in a world of mind-blowing, and free public art.
Kamloops is a great example, with its downtown displaying over 30 murals. In partnership with local artists and business owners, the program called Back Alley Art Gallery brings vibrancy through every walk downtown. It also has some stops at sculptures and other art installations you might want to see!
This mural at the Landmark Centre is just one of many in Calgary’s latest public art development, the Beltline Urban Mural Project (BUMP). BUMP’s goal is to transform Calgary into an open-air museum with stunning art pieces in every corner. New additions to the project every year make the murals a must-see for everyone traveling in Southern Alberta.
Known Canada-wide for being a hub of art and creativity, Montreal, QC also has a long list of murals all over the city. There is even an eleven-day mural festival in downtown Montreal, that has incredible music, artist talks and admission is free! This year’s festival was a blast, so keep an eye out for upcoming dates.
Murals are a great, inexpensive way to experience the local street art scene. While everywhere has great art, Canada’s art scene is particularly talented, with unique works painted on the walls of the country. So be sure to check some out on your next trip!
