The Food Frenzy: Finding Good Eats on the Road

Written by The Wandering Writers Group

When planning trips travelers tend to think only big Canadian cities, like Toronto, have diversity in food. It’s easy to find Toronto’s humble cafe ‘Banh Mi Boys’ for a quick cheap eat, or ‘The Chase’ for fresh seafood on a fancy night out. However, regardless of where you are, Canadians have a love affair with good eats and drinks from around the world.

From being a great way to be immersed in different Canadian cultures, to a satisfying way to finish a hike, food can make or break any trip. The big struggle when you’re on the road is sometimes it’s confusing and overwhelming to find a good hidden local spot. Travellers, worry no more! We’ve collected our top 3 resources that help provide quality insider knowledge of the perfect spot for any trip.

Instagram

Most cities have a tourism-related Instagram page, where you’re bound to find info on top places to eat and drink. Of course, you’re also able to search by hashtag or location too! The best part is you’re able to see featured pictures and videos of dishes that might stand out to you. Sometimes you’re able to take a look at a special limited-time menu, giving you the scoop on what’s new.

Google Maps

Underestimated, Google Maps is a great resource for finding places to eat in each and every city. The best part? Locals generally give good reviews to their favourite places to help them shine, and you don’t have the unbalanced reviews that you might find on other travel food recommendation sites.

Reddit

Although not widely known or thought of for travel content, Reddit is a great way to get recommendations directly from locals. Or you can search and see what foodies say about the restaurants they’ve been to across Canada. You can even post to the city’s subreddit yourself with what you’re looking for, and get insider info from locals who are happy to let you know what’s worth checking out.

So for your next trip make sure that you use these three resources to dig a little and you’ll be able to find those lovely hidden gems in every city!
